Foundation Holds College Day (2011)
(Special to the Daily Herald, Roanoke Rapids, NC)
Helping to prepare high school students for the next phase of their lives is very important to the
Gregory B. Davis Foundation’s (GBDF) Officers and Board. On Monday, April 4, 2011, GBDF held its annual
College Day at Northampton County High School East (NCHS-East). The purpose of this activity was to
enlighten students about college life’s academic rigor and the social, civic and athletic opportunities.
Fifty students from varying grades were present for the event. A panel of young professionals was presented
to the students including a graduate of NCHS-East. The panelists had all completed college and currently
gainfully employed or admitted to graduate school. The panel members addressed topics such as when they
decided to attend college, when they decided on a college major, activities they were involved in on campus,
how to obtain financial aid, when to begin that process and much more. The students remained interested and
focused during the panel discussion and asked questions.
The Foundation applauds the panelists for giving back to their community in this way. The panelists
included Ms. Allison Heckler – graduate of Chowan College and currently employed as a teacher at Conway
Middle School; Ms. Ashley Collins – graduate of Duke University and currently employed as a teacher at
Central Elementary School; Ms. Jacqueline Langford – graduate of Fayetteville State University currently
admitted to graduate school at North Carolina Central University; and Mr. Kevin Duquette – graduate of
SUNY of New York currently employed as a teacher at NCHS-East.
Students received written information and health related giveaways and panelists were presented with gift
cards using grant funds awarded to GBDF through the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation’s Ribbon of Hope Program.
Ms. Coletta Edwards, Career Management Instructor at NCHS-East was instrumental in organizing the local
arrangements and Principal Pamela Chamblee demonstrated a support for this event.
Currently, GBDF is accepting applications for its Educational Incentive Program. This incentive provides
a total of two scholarships to area high school seniors attending Northampton County West and East who have
average GPAs, but possess an aptitude for achievement. To review the application guidelines and to complete
